TROOP 970
Florida Sea Base Adventure
Key West, Florida
Well, the boys proved once again that Troop has some of the best scouts in the USA! Half way through
our groups adventure Hurricane Dennis approached the Florida Keys and the evacuation orders were
given.

Plans had to change quickly to ensure the safety of our young men. Before leaving the island, members
of the Troop 970 Sea Base Crew helped staff break down the camp base and then pack and move all of
the supplies to the beach head for evacuation. The last job entailed getting the canoes to safety. So our
crews paddled them 5.5 miles over the open seas, just over a 2 hour trip. (Bear in mind that this was
after 4-5 hours of deep sea fishing, dismantling all of the crew sites and moving everything to the beach. )

After such a long day the crews were happy to eat and shower and then board a bus to Miami where they
awaited the trip home. Mr. Grolimund made some pretty fancy arrangements of bus, hotel and flights at
the last minute.
We owe the five Troop 970 Sea Base crews a huge “Way to Go!!!!” for being fantastic examples of
Scouting’s service to others despite the sacrifice to themselves, and although every adult provided that
very same example, we owe Mr. G. a huge debt of “THANKS!!!!” for getting our boys and adults safely and
swiftly back home ahead of Hurricane Dennis.
There are many great
970 adventure stories,
but this is one of which
we can all be proud.
Blue Ridge Mountain Campground
A group of over 40 boys spent a week at Camp Ottari and had a blast. Boys had more time to participate
in activities due to the mess hall style meal plan.Unusually good weather was at hand for a 970
adventure which allowed for a forest hammock bonanza. A few brave souls used the zip line that was
over 85 feet high and crossed the lake. We even got the Camp Staff award for "Largest Controlled
Campfire".

The Camp was a good environment for earning merit badges and many were earned. Although Ottari
provides a program to help scouts earn their First Class Rank the adults from 970 ran our own program
which allowed the young boys to complete rank requirements as well as merit badge requirements.

This camp is known for it's aquatic features and we participated in all with true 970 style - taking first
place in the wet t-shirt swim and exchange, dry match stick relay as well as the canoe paddle race.
Several of our illustrious scouters received red belly awards for their performances in the waterfront belly
flop contest.

National Scout Jamboree 2005
Fort A.P. Hill, Bowling Green, VA
The largest group of Scouts and leaders (12) from Troop 970 attended the 11 day National Jamboree.

A few highlights of the event were: a live appearance of President George W. Bush who gave an
impressive Scouting focused speech, a 27-minute pyrotechnic display by Zambelli fireworks, a Merit
Badge Midway, adventures provided by the US Army, Navy, Coast Guard and National Guard, shooting
sports (archery, rifle, shotgun trap and skeet), water sports (canoe, kayak, scuba), lots of hiking in 90
degree temps and of course patch trading.

Jamboree Troops are contingent troops. That means they are made  up of boys (36) and adults (4) from
different home troops. Each contingent troop (over 10,000 of them) designed and built a gateway
to their site. The photo below was taken in front of the Jamboree Troop 521 tent site.
